International Christian School - Uijeongbu
International Christian School Uijeongbu (ICSU) is located north of the Korean capital of Seoul in the city of Uijeongbu. Uijeongbu sits nestled in the mountains and is home to Gyeonggi province’s sports complex which includes a 28,000 capacity soccer stadium and professional volleyball stadium. Uijeongbu, which once bustled with multiple US military bases, is now a bustling satellite city of Seoul. Fun Fact: Uijeongbu, then a small village, was the home of the 4077th Mobile Army Surgical Hospital in the 70s TV show M*A*S*H.
ICSU, NICS’ first school, began as Liberty Christian School in 1983 when U.S. Army chaplains requested Dr. Joe Hale to start a school to help in the education of American children. Because Uijeongbu was north of Seoul, the U.S. military bases did not offer “Command Sponsorship” of American military families. ICSU provided an English language school, where none had previously existed.
Much has changed since the founding of the school 36 years ago, Uijeongbu grew from a small community to a city of nearly 500,000 and the U.S. military bases surrounding ICSU have closed. The ICSU student body that was once primarily from the U.S. is now 45% Korean students, 35% Americans, 15% Chinese and 5% from other countries.
Korea is an extremely safe country, where crime is virtually non-existent. The government has built many public parks, river walks, hiking trails, and public use areas that create a high quality of living. Organized public transportation, clean and landscaped cities, friendly people, and the fastest nationwide Internet in the world, makes South Korea a highly desirable place to live.
ICSU is an American curriculum school following an American school calendar. Technology is integrated into all levels of the school. ICSU is a 1:1 school with grades 4-12 using dedicated Chromebooks and K - 3 class sets of iPads. Biblical truth is integrated into academics at every grade level.
ICSU’s teachers are state-certified professionals with a passion for sharing Christ with our students. The staff at ICSU engage students beyond the classroom through sports, clubs, Bible studies, and discipleship.
Staff is fully supported by numerous benefits at ICSU. Our Member Care makes weekly runs to Costco, to support staff purchases of American goods. Training opportunities exist in the country and out of country. We are a family who supports and cherishes our staff, students, parents, and community. Come join us at ICSU
ICSU is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC), the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI), and the Korean Ministry of Education.
