Elementary Teacher, Grade Five
JOB DESCRIPTION – Upper Elementary Teacher
Brasilia International School (BIS) is located in Brazil's capital city. Brasilia is a purpose-built city, designed in the late 1950s as the federal district of the country. Like Washington, DC, it is not a municipality or state. The original city is designed in the shape of an airplane where the seat of government is in the "cockpit"; the hotels, TV tower, and major road arteries are in the middle body; and the residential areas and businesses are in the wings. BIS is located near the top of the southern tip of the south wing which is also the area where our ex-pat staff lives. Brasilia has 2.8 million people with many living in 'satellite cities' surrounding the original "airplane" city. Brazil is the 5th largest country in the world and Brasilia the 4th largest city. Brasilia is home to 133 embassies which contributes to the great diversity of the city and school. Brasilia has amazing weather, a spacious city park and man-made lake, accessibility to beautiful waterfalls, a great assortment of restaurants and sidewalk cafes, and delicious local foods including tapioca and acai. There is much to see and enjoy.
BIS is unique in Brasilia as the only international school that is not required to have Brazilian accreditation. This allows us the flexibility to pursue academic and spiritual excellence without having to compromise to government or ministry regulations. BIS has an ELC3 through the 12th-grade program with the majority of students in the elementary school. BIS is fortunate to have the freedom to share and integrate our Biblical worldview throughout all the curriculum and into the community. Our campus is situated on 2 lots in the "school zone" of the south wing. The leased campus and buildings were built to be a school and there is an area to grow on these lots in the future. Currently, BIS has 160 students from 22 countries. Peak enrollment is always in January and last year BIS had 192 students from 37 countries. We are thankful to God to be here in Brasilia!
The BIS teacher is our school’s most important resource. BIS is committed to finding the most highly qualified, Christian upper elementary teacher for this position. This teacher must be able to follow the BIS curriculum map/guide (including scope & sequence, standards, benchmarks, and resources) and couple it with their own personal, creative curriculum planning. The curriculum must be delivered from a Christian worldview with Biblical truth illuminated in the unit, lesson plan, and direct instruction. Administratively, BIS is proud of the dedication and commitment of its teachers to the eternal lives of our students and community and the work they do facilitates success in the school. BIS upper elementary teachers will have a variety of language and cultural backgrounds represented by the students represented in their classrooms, so this teacher must be comfortable with, and excited about, differentiated learning.
A love and passion for teaching upper elementary students! Ability to clearly communicate and represent BIS well to the community, families, and students. An understanding of curriculum mapping and an enthusiasm to revise last year's maps with new ideas and practices. Demonstrate a reasonable level of computer literacy. Ability to manage the classroom and bring enthusiasm for learning to the students. Be a believing Christian with a consistent testimony coupled with a passionate desire to see the lost hear the good news and be saved! Willingness to live life together in community.
The candidate must possess:
1. Minimally hold a bachelor’s degree in elementary education (highly qualified).
2. Stateside/provincially certified as an educator and/or ACSI certified as a teacher.
3. Minimum 2 years of teaching experience.
4. Ability to clearly communicate and represent BIS to the community.
5. Ability to work closely with the teachers, staff, and parents.
6. Flexibility, passion, excitement, and love for working with upper elementary students.
7. A Christian with a consistent testimony among his/her family and peers.
