JOB DESCRIPTION – Music - Orchestra

Orchestra Director’s Job Description and Performance Expectations
Instruments of the Orchestra program include:
Violin, viola, cello, bass, harp and one piano accompanist per class
High School String Orchestra (two sections) offered currently during ‘D and H’
blocks. Class time is currently from 1:45 - 3:10 daily. Each class works on individual
literature but also combines with the other section for the Cantata, Large Group
Festival and the Pop’s Concert. These are not auditioned groups.
Middle School Orchestras currently offered daily for 45 minute classes.
6 th Grade Orchestra (Preludium)
7 th grade Orchestra (Sinfonia)
8 th Grade Orchestra (Chamber)
Elementary Orchestra is currently offered as an “After School Activity” choice.
Beginners meet on Wednesdays from 3:10 - 4:30 and the more advanced students
meet on Fridays from 3:10 - 4:30. An Elementary program should be continued in
order to keep strong MS and HS programs. Since these are part of the “After School
Program” the instructor is paid an extra stipend.
TRI-M Music Honor Society Sponsor, Middle School and/or High School
Chapters (MS meets Tuesdays after school from 3:20 - 4:05 and HS meets from 7:10
- 7:45 on Thursday mornings before school). It is expected that all music faculty will
be involved in TRI-M management and activities). These groups serve their YISS and
neighborhood communities through their musical skills. We have performed and
local Elder Care Centers and Retirement centers, caroled for our school family,
raised funds to purchase instruments for the needy, provided Elementary Outreach,
and have helped to run Large Group and International Festivals.
Concert Performance Schedule for 2019-20
MS orchestras perform in October, December, March (Solos and Ensemble
performances in class) and May (Pops Concert).
Some performances are in conjunction with the bands and others are just string
The candidate must possess:
Current state or provincial issued teacher certification
Minimum of Two years of teaching experience
Minimum of an undergraduate degree in education
Flexibility of schedule
The preferred candidate will possess:
Masters in Music Education or related field
Experience teaching in an International and / or cross-cultural environment
