Highlands International School (HIS) was founded on February 2, 2003. Since May 19, 2003, HIS has been a member of the Network of International Christian Schools (NICS), along with many schools around the world. Job Summary/Objective

The Highlands teacher is the school’s most important resource. Highlands is committed to finding the most highly qualified, Christian teacher for each position at the school. The Highlands teacher must be able to follow the Highlands curriculum guide (scope & sequence, standards, benchmarks and resources) and couple it with their own personal curriculum plan (yearlong, unit and lesson plans) and deliver from a Christian worldview their best, most rigorous and enthusiastic teaching to a diverse audience. General Responsibilities

Instructional

  • Teach classes as assigned following the prescribed curriculum guides.
  •  Design yearlong, unit and lesson plans which guide classroom instruction.
  • Effect student learning through mastery of the subject material by utilizing valid teaching techniques to achieve curriculum goals within the framework of the school’s philosophy.
  • Plan a program of study that, as much as possible, meets the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students, challenging each to do his/her best work.
  • Employ a variety of instructional methods and materials that will provide for creative teaching to reach the whole child: spiritually, mentally, physically, socially, and emotionally.
  • Plan through approved channels the balanced use of field trips, guest speakers, and other media.
  • Assess the learning of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
  • Keep proper discipline in the classroom and on the school premises for a good teaching environment.
  • Be prepared and willing to take on assignments outside of his/her subject areas as the need arises.
  • Inform the administration if unable to fulfill any duty assigned. Prepare and make available adequate information and materials for a substitute teacher.

Non Instructional

  • Cooperate with the NICS Board, DAC and administration in implementing all policies, procedure, and directives governing the operation of the school.
  • Notify and discuss with the administration any policy he/she is unable to support.
  • Maintain regular and accurate attendance and grade records to allow for a comprehensive knowledge of each student’s progress.
  • Post grades minimally on PowerSchool by the assigned time.
  • Keep students, parents, and the administration adequately informed of each student’s progress or deficiencies and give sufficient notice of failure.
  • Maintain a clean, attractive, well-ordered classroom.
  • Supervise extra-curricular activities, weekly duties, organizations and outings as assigned.
  • Support the broader program of the school by attending extra-curricular activities when possible.
  • Utilize educational opportunities and evaluation processes for professional growth.
  • Seek the counsel of the administrator, colleagues, and parents while maintaining a teachable attitude.
  • Provide input and recommendations for administrative and managerial functions in the school.
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled meetings, including devotional, in-service, retreat, committee, faculty, PLCs and any other designated meetings.
  • Know the procedures for dealing with issues of an emergency nature.
  • Contribute to the general improvement of the school program.
  • Refuse to use or circulate confidential information inappropriately.
  • Perform any other duties which may be assigned by the administration.
  • Give as much notice as possible of unavoidable absences and cooperate in covering the responsibilities of colleagues who must be absent.
  • Help ensure students are prepared for the Christmas program, End of the Year Program, Bolivia Day, and other planned events.
  • Supervise students during lunch and recess.
  • Provide after school tutoring at least one day a week on the assigned day.

  • Maintain use of proper, clearly articulated English in all forms of communication and require the same usage of students in all school disciplines.
  • Recognize the need for good public relations and represent the school in a favorable and professional manner to the school constituency and general public.
  • Place the teaching ministry ahead of outside or volunteer work.
  • Make an effort to appreciate, understand and utilize the uniqueness of the local La Paz community.
  • Other duties as assigned by administration.

Qualifications

1. Minimally hold a bachelor’s degree in education and/or the field of study which he/she will be teaching (highly qualified).

2. Be stateside/provincial certified as an educator and/or be ACSI certified as a teacher.

3. Ability to work within their budget.

4. Ability to clearly communicate and represent Highlands well to the community, families and students.

5. Ability to meet deadlines (for PowerSchool in attendance and grading; and in personal curriculum planning).

6. Demonstrate a reasonable level of computer literacy, having a basic proficiency in doing word processing, e-mailing, and accessing the internet.

7. Ability to manage the classroom and bring enthusiasm for learning to the students.

8. Have the physical capacity to perform all teacher responsibilities.

9. A Christian with a consistent testimony among his/her family and peers.
