Brasilia International School (BIS) is a small caring international school established to meet the needs of expatriate families living in Brasilia. BIS is located in the capital city of Brazil. The population of the city is about 2 million. The climate is mild with a rainy season and a dry season (Nov - May for rain and June to Oct. dry). BIS is located on a beautiful, quiet lot overlooking the city of Brasilia.
Brasilia International School is a private non-profit school established to primarily serve the international community in Brasilia. This community consists largely of the diplomatic core, but also includes businessmen, missionaries, and other expatriates.
Brasilia International School began in September of 1999 as Brasilia International Academy. The school was located in Asa Norte and was attended by 11 students from 6 different countries. In the 2004-2005 school year, the enrollment at BIS reached a high of 108 students from all around the world. BIS offers a quality caring, classroom environment for students Preschool through 12th grade.
The mission of Brasilia International School is to establish and maintain an American-based academic program in which families from many different countries can receive academic training in English for their children. The environment of BIS minimizes transition stress, provides safety and security for children, and helps each student individually be successful.
The goal of BIS is to provide a high quality North American style education based on a Christian worldview. It is understood, however, that students from all countries, cultures, and religions will be treated with respect and fairness, including the Federal Republic of Brazil, its leaders, and the people. The programs at BIS are directed toward individual enrichment. By providing a low student-teacher ratio, BIS is able to help each student achieve his/her fullest potential. The vision is that as students learn to behave responsibly at school, they will be gaining necessary life skills to help them become successful, contributing leaders who will make a positive impact in their culturally diverse, complex, interdependent world.
BIS uses curriculum materials published in the United States. Most of this material is common to public and private schools in the US. BIS uses both secular and Christian publishers. BIS strives to integrate Biblical principles into the entire curriculum.
Brasilia International School offers after school clubs to help students develop physically and socially. The clubs offered each year vary depending on interest and availability of club leaders. BIS welcomes parent volunteers who provide a special activity for one of our clubs.
Brasilia International School is a member of the Association of Christian Schools International (ACSI). Brasilia International School is also a candidate for accreditation with ACSI and with the Southern Association of Schools and Colleges (SACS). BIS is currently undergoing the self-study process to develop a comprehensive school profile. BIS plans to host a visiting team during the 2006-2007 school year.
The faculty consists of United States and Brazilian personnel. The staff from the U.S is recruited each year by our stateside office and then placed accordingly after administrative approval. Each teacher must have proper certification and training. Teachers recruited from the states must raise partial support and therefore apply for appropriate visas to enter the country. The school provides housing and utilities. We would be very excited if you were to be a part of our international family.
Brasilia International School is located in the middle of the suburbs of Brasilia. Presently, BIS rents the facilities that house the school. The school has one computer lab, one science lab and a two-floor library. The campus consists of two buildings. The larger containing the school offices, library, cafeteria and elementary classrooms. The second building contains the computer lab, the science lab, high school classrooms and upper elementary classes. The campus has a swimming pool, soccer field, outdoor volleyball court, outdoor basketball court (half-court), and a playground and cover snack area.
