CLASSROOM TEACHER

JOB SUMMARY:
The BIS teacher is the school’s most important resource. BIS is committed to finding the most highly qualified, Christian teacher for each position at the school while seeing it at also as a ministry. The teacher must be able to follow curriculum standards while keeping a ministry mindset and deliver from a Christian worldview their best, most rigorous and enthusiastic teaching to a diverse audience.

QUALIFICATIONS:
1. Minimally hold a bachelor’s degree in education
2. Be stateside/provincial certified as an educator and/or be ACSI certified or in process of obtaining such certification as a teacher
3. Have at minimal 1 year of teaching experience
4. Ability to clearly communicate and represent BIS well to the community, families and students
5. Ability to meet deadlines as assigned.
6. Demonstrate a reasonable level of computer literacy, having a basic proficiency in doing word processing, e-mailing, and accessing the internet.
7. Ability to manage the classroom and bring enthusiasm for learning to the students.
8. Ability to clearly communicate and represent BIS honorably to the community with a strong Christian witness.
9. Fully comply with all items contained in the BIS Faculty Handbook, NICS Missions Manual, or other directives/policies set forth by the Elementary Principal to who will collaborate with the FLT.
10. Demonstrates in his/her teaching approach in that every student has the potential to be successful, a heart of empathy for those struggling, and encourages those to whom he/she leads to maintain a similar level of grace-based teaching philosophy.
11. A willingness to be flexible, respectful, and humble while carrying out directives and initiatives while understanding the Head of School, in collaboration with the FLT/FLT Plus members, remains the final authority as pertains to any school policy changes.
12. A Christian with a consistent testimony among his/her family and peers.

REPORTS TO: Principal/Assistant Principal

COORDINATES WITH: Head of School, Curriculum Coordinators, School Chaplin, Team Leaders, additional FLT/FLT Plus members

TYPE OF COORDINATION:
To ensure a high quality education for all students in a designated class while keeping open and frequent communication with families. To carry out the professional duties of a teacher as circumstances may require modifications to established duties and workload based on the needs of the ministry. Carry out school polices and initiatives as presented by the respective Principal and Curriculum Coordinator.

POSITION TYPE: Full Time/Full Salary

PERFORMANCE RESPONSIBILITIES:

Instructional

  • Teach classes as assigned following the prescribed within curriculum guidelines set forth by curriculum coordinators and related school polices.
  • Design unit and lesson plans which guide classroom instruction and align to curricular standards to include intentional biblical integration (BWI).
  • Effect student learning through mastery of the subject material by utilizing valid teaching techniques to achieve curriculum goals within the framework of the school’s Christian philosophy.
  • Follow the stated academic standards (Atlas) to assist in meeting the individual needs, interests, and abilities of the students; challenging each to do his/her best work while offering grace and encouragement.
  • Employ a variety of resources and materials that will provide for creative teaching to reach the whole child: spiritually, mentally, physically, socially, and emotionally.
  • Meet all stated deadlines as assigned.
  • Assess the learning of students on a regular basis and provide progress reports as required.
  • Keep proper discipline in the classroom for a wholesome teaching environment.
  • Active participation in spiritual emphasis programs (Landing, Loft)
  • Be prepared and willing to take on assignments outside of his/her subject areas as the need arises or as assigned to include teaching various subject areas.

Non Instructional

  • Cooperate with the Head of School, BIS administration (FLT), assigned supervisors, NICS Board, and other leaders as assigned in implementing all policies, procedure, and directives governing the operation of the school.
  • Maintain regular and accurate attendance and grade records to allow for a comprehensive knowledge of each student’s progress.
  • Post grades as assigned and keep updated in school operating system.
  • Keep students, parents, and the administration adequately informed of each student’s progress or deficiencies and give sufficient notice of struggles.
  • Maintain a clean, attractive, visual stimulating, and well-ordered classroom.
  • Update classroom or other bulletin boards (hallways/around campus) as assigned with positive messages of encouragement combined with creativity.
  • Supervise extra-curricular activities, weekly duties, organizations and outings as assigned.
  • Support the broader program of the school by attending extra-curricular activities as assigned.
  • Utilize educational opportunities and evaluation processes for professional growth.
  • Seek the counsel of the FLT members, FLT Plus members, colleagues, and parents while maintaining a teachable and biblical attitude.
  • Attend and participate in all scheduled meetings, including devotionals, in-service, retreats, committee, faculty, and other meetings as assigned.
  • Know the procedures for dealing with issues of an emergency nature.
  • Contribute to the general improvement of the school program.
  • Refuse to use or circulate confidential information inappropriately.
  • Perform any other duties which may be assigned by the FLT/FLT Plus.
  • Give as much notice as possible of unavoidable absences and cooperate in covering the responsibilities of colleagues who must be absent.
  • Keep current items within a student portfolio as assigned.

Professional

  • Evaluate own teaching critically to improve effectiveness
  • Take responsibility for one’s own professional development including knowledge of school policies and procedures.
  • Keep up-to-date with current educational thinking and practice, both by study and by attendance at courses, workshops and meetings.
  • Contribute to meetings, discussions and management systems necessary to co-ordinate the work of the school as a whole.
  • Undertake break time and before school duties as directed to ensure the smooth running of the school.
  • Participate in performance management through the setting of personal targets and monitoring of performance as set out in the Teachers’ Pay and Conditions.
  • Keep up to date and further your knowledge of Education through personal research, reading, observation and coaching opportunities.
  • Take on any additional responsibilities and directives which might, from time to time, be determined the Head of School or other FLT/FLT Plus Members.
  • Carry out the duties above and conduct yourself in a professional and positive fashion.

Personal

  • Demonstrate the character qualities of enthusiasm, courtesy, flexibility, integrity, gratitude, kindness, self-control, perseverance, and punctuality.
  • Meet everyday stress with emotional stability, objectivity, and optimism.
  • Develop and maintain rapport with students, parents, and staff by treating others with friendliness, dignity, and consideration.
  • Respectfully submit and be loyal to designated authority per school policy.
  • Maintain a personal appearance that models cleanliness, modesty, good taste, and is in agreement with school policy (dress code).
  • Maintain use of proper, clearly articulated English in all forms of communication and require the same usage of students in all school disciplines, curricular and extra-curricular exclude language classes.
  • Recognize the need for good public relations and represent the school at all times in a favorable, positive, and professional manner to the school constituency and general public.
  • Place the teaching ministry ahead of outside or volunteer work.
  • Make an effort to appreciate, understand and utilize the uniqueness of the local community.
  • Other duties as assigned.

Whilst every effort has been made to explain the main duties and responsibilities of the classroom teacher, each individual task undertaken may not be identified. Teachers will be expected to comply with any reasonable request from an FLT member to undertake work of a similar level that is not specified in this job description.

2. Must have the ability to cooperate with employees in other departments and work as a team member in educating the students.
3. Must be able to think quickly and act appropriately in emergency situations.
4. Must be flexible and able to adapt to change with a humble/positive attitude.
5. Must be punctual to work and to assigned meetings.
6. Must be able to function properly under time constraints and perform well under pressure.
7. Must strive to understand the local culture and demonstrate cultural sensitivity to the local and BIS community.
8. Must be a strong Christian witness to families, students and colleagues.

EVALUATED: Yearly by the supervising principal and/or assistant principal.
